What isotretinoin is used for

Isotretinoin is the most effective medicine for severe acne: it shrinks the sebaceous glands, reduces sebum production and normalizes skin cell renewal. It is indicated for severe nodular or cystic acne and for acne that does not respond to standard therapy. Treatment is a course of several months, with the dose calculated by body weight; many patients achieve long-term remission after one course.

How to use

Take exactly as prescribed, usually once or twice daily with a meal containing fat — this significantly improves absorption. Swallow the capsule whole. The course and cumulative dose are determined by the dermatologist; blood tests (liver enzymes, lipids) are typically checked before and during treatment. Acne may temporarily worsen in the first weeks — this is expected and passes.

Critical pregnancy warning

Isotretinoin causes severe birth defects. It must never be used during pregnancy. Women of childbearing age must exclude pregnancy before starting, use effective contraception during treatment and for at least one month after the last dose, and must not breastfeed. Do not donate blood during treatment and for one month after it.

Possible side effects

Very common and expected: dry lips, skin and eyes, nosebleeds, cheilitis, skin peeling. Also possible: muscle and joint aches, headache, mood changes, reduced night vision. Report to your doctor: severe headache with vision changes, persistent low mood or thoughts of self-harm, severe abdominal pain, yellowing of skin or eyes. Avoid alcohol, vitamin A supplements, waxing and laser skin procedures during treatment and for several months after.

Storage

Store below 25–30°C in the original package, protected from light and moisture, and out of the reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack.
