What azithromycin is used for

Azithromycin is used to treat infections caused by susceptible bacteria: infections of the respiratory tract (including bronchitis and pneumonia), the ear, nose, throat and sinuses, the skin and soft tissues, and certain urinary and genital infections. It does not work against viral infections such as the common cold or flu. Unnecessary use of antibiotics promotes resistance, so it should be used only when a doctor has prescribed it.

How to use

Take Azisign-500 exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Azithromycin is usually taken once daily; tablets may be taken with or without food, but a consistent routine helps. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not skip doses and do not stop the course early, even if you start to feel better — this is important both for curing the infection and for limiting antibiotic resistance.

Follow the prescribed dose and duration — do not self-medicate.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is nearly time for the next one; never double the dose.

Antacids containing aluminium or magnesium can reduce absorption — separate them from the dose as advised by your doctor.

Possible side effects

Common side effects include nausea, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, vomiting, headache and a changed sense of taste. Most settle without special treatment. Seek medical help promptly if you develop severe or persistent diarrhoea, an irregular heartbeat, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), a rash, or swelling of the face and throat. Stop the medicine and contact a doctor if any serious reaction occurs.

Important precautions

Tell your doctor about heart rhythm problems, liver or kidney disease, myasthenia gravis, or any allergy to macrolide antibiotics before taking azithromycin. It can interact with other medicines, including some antacids, anticoagulants, and drugs that affect heart rhythm, so report everything you take. Azithromycin may be used in pregnancy or breastfeeding only if a doctor decides it is necessary. Alcohol is best avoided during treatment.
