Bronchodual is a combined bronchodilator for inhalation containing fenoterol hydrobromide 50 micrograms and ipratropium bromide 20 micrograms per puff. It is used under medical supervision for the relief of bronchospasm in asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This pack contains one pressurized metered-dose inhaler of 200 puffs and is manufactured by Boehringer Ingelheim (French market pack). The same combination is known in other countries under the brand name Berodual.

What Bronchodual is used for

The combination of fenoterol (a short-acting beta-2 agonist) and ipratropium (an anticholinergic) relaxes the muscles of the airways by two complementary mechanisms. It is indicated for the relief and prevention of bronchospasm in asthma and COPD, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. It relieves shortness of breath, wheezing and chest tightness and is used on prescription as part of an individual treatment plan.

How to use

Use the inhaler exactly as prescribed. General labeling information recommends 1–2 puffs per inhalation, with the daily total usually not exceeding 8 puffs. Shake the canister before use, exhale fully, place the mouthpiece between your lips and press the canister once while breathing in slowly and deeply, then hold your breath for a few seconds. Rinse your mouth after inhalation if dryness or irritation occurs. Follow the patient leaflet supplied with the pack.

Possible side effects

The most common effects are dry mouth, headache, dizziness, tremor, palpitations and cough. Contact your doctor if you notice worsening shortness of breath immediately after inhalation (paradoxical bronchospasm), rapid or irregular heartbeat, eye pain or blurred vision, or difficulty urinating.

Important precautions

Tell your doctor before use if you have heart disease, arrhythmia, high blood pressure, hyperthyroidism, diabetes, glaucoma, prostate enlargement or difficulty urinating, and if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Avoid getting the spray into the eyes. Do not exceed the prescribed number of puffs — increasing need for the inhaler is a signal to see your doctor, as it may indicate worsening of the underlying disease.

Storage

Store below 25–30°C, away from heat and direct sunlight. The canister is pressurized: do not pierce or burn it, even when empty. Keep out of the reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack.
