Esperal 500 mg is a prescription medicine containing disulfiram, used under medical supervision as part of the treatment of alcohol dependence. How disulfiram works

Disulfiram blocks the enzyme aldehyde dehydrogenase, which is needed to break down alcohol in the body. If alcohol is consumed while taking disulfiram, a toxic intermediate (acetaldehyde) accumulates and causes flushing of the face, throbbing headache, nausea, vomiting, sweating, chest discomfort and palpitations. Knowing that drinking will produce this reaction helps the patient maintain abstinence. Treatment is started and supervised by a doctor and works best together with counselling or a support program.

How to use

Take Esperal exactly as prescribed. Treatment begins after a period of complete abstinence (at least 12 hours without alcohol), usually with one tablet daily, preferably in the morning; the dose and duration are determined by the doctor. Swallow the tablet with water.

Critical alcohol warning

Do not consume any alcohol while taking disulfiram and for at least 14 days after the last dose. This includes beer, wine and spirits, as well as hidden alcohol in sauces, desserts, mouthwashes, certain medicines and cosmetic products applied to the skin. The disulfiram–alcohol reaction can be severe and, in rare cases, dangerous. In case of accidental reaction, seek medical help.

Possible side effects

Without alcohol, common effects include drowsiness, fatigue, headache, a metallic or garlic-like taste and skin rash. Report to your doctor any yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, severe abdominal pain, numbness or tingling in the limbs, or marked mood changes — liver function is monitored during treatment.

Important precautions

Do not use in severe heart disease, severe liver failure, psychosis, pregnancy or breastfeeding. Tell your doctor about all medicines you take — disulfiram interacts with warfarin, phenytoin, metronidazole and many others. Never give this medicine to a person who does not know they are taking it.

Storage

Store below 25–30°C in the original package, protected from moisture, and out of the reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack.
