What fluconazole is used for

Fluconazole is an antifungal agent of the triazole group; it suppresses the growth of fungi and yeasts, including Candida. Under medical supervision it is used for:

• vaginal candidiasis (thrush) and candidiasis of other localisations;
• oropharyngeal, oesophageal and other mucosal candidiasis;
• cryptococcosis, including cryptococcal meningitis, in immunocompromised patients;
• dermatomycoses, including tinea infections of the skin and nails;
• prevention of fungal infections in patients at high risk (for example after chemotherapy or transplantation), as determined by the physician.

How it is used

Fluconazole is a prescription medicine: the dose and the duration of treatment are chosen by the physician and depend on the type and severity of the infection and on kidney function. Some uncomplicated infections are treated with a single dose, others require a course. The course should be completed as prescribed; stopping early allows the infection to return. Fluconazole is not used for self-medication, including self-treatment of thrush.

Possible side effects

During treatment headache, nausea, abdominal discomfort, diarrhoea, flatulence, taste changes, skin rash and dizziness have been reported. Less common but serious effects include liver injury, severe skin reactions, blood count changes and heart rhythm disturbances (QT prolongation). Yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, persistent vomiting, skin rash with blistering, or palpitations require immediate medical attention.

Important precautions

• Prescription only: dose and duration are decided by a physician.
• Liver function and, when relevant, kidney function are monitored during long courses.
• Fluconazole interacts with many medicines — anticoagulants (warfarin), some antidiabetics, anticonvulsants, immunosuppressants and others. Give the doctor the full list of medicines in use.
• Pregnancy and breastfeeding require a separate decision by the physician; pregnancy prevention is advised during long courses.
• Alcohol and other hepatotoxic factors should be avoided during treatment.
• In elderly patients and in patients with kidney or liver disease the dose is adjusted individually.

Storage

Store below 25-30 °C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture, in the original packaging. Keep out of reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack.
