What Lenvatinib is used for

Lenvatinib is a multi-kinase inhibitor that blocks several receptor tyrosine kinases involved in tumour growth and blood-vessel formation. On prescription it is used in adults for certain cancers, including differentiated (papillary or follicular) thyroid cancer that no longer responds to radioactive iodine, hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer), renal cell carcinoma, and in combination regimens for endometrial carcinoma. The exact indication and dose are decided by the treating oncologist.

How to use

Lenvatinib is taken by mouth, usually once a day at about the same time each day, with or without food. The dose depends on the indication, body weight and how the medicine is tolerated, and it may be adjusted or paused by the oncologist. Use it exactly as prescribed.

• Swallow the capsule whole with water; do not open or crush it.
• Do not change the dose or stop treatment on your own.
• Keep to the monitoring schedule (blood pressure, blood and urine tests) your doctor gives you.

Possible side effects

Common effects include high blood pressure, fatigue, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, reduced appetite and weight loss, hand-foot skin reaction, mouth sores, hoarseness, an underactive thyroid and protein in the urine. Serious effects can include bleeding, liver problems, kidney problems, heart-rhythm changes (QT prolongation) and blood clots. Report any new or worsening symptoms to your doctor promptly.

• Prescription medicine — cytotoxic antineoplastic; use only under the supervision of a cancer specialist.
• Tell your doctor about high blood pressure, heart, liver or kidney problems, bleeding disorders, and about all other medicines you take.
• Not recommended during pregnancy; effective contraception is required during treatment and breastfeeding should be stopped.
• Blood pressure, blood counts, liver, kidney and thyroid function are monitored during treatment.

Storage

Store at room temperature (below 30 °C) in the original container, protected from light and moisture, out of reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack.
