What ambenonium is used for

Myasthenia gravis is an autoimmune disease in which nerve impulses reach the muscles with difficulty, causing muscle weakness and rapid fatigue. Ambenonium blocks the enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine, so more of this neurotransmitter remains available at the neuromuscular junction and muscle strength improves. The medicine controls symptoms; it does not cure the underlying disease and is part of a treatment plan managed by a neurologist.

How to use

Dosing is strictly individual. Treatment is started at low doses and adjusted carefully by the doctor according to response and tolerability; tablets are usually taken several times a day, with the timing adapted to the patient's daily activity. Never change the dose on your own: both too little and too much of the medicine cause muscle weakness, and distinguishing them requires medical assessment.

Possible side effects

Effects are related to increased acetylcholine: abdominal cramps, nausea, diarrhea, increased saliva and bronchial secretions, sweating, slow heart rate, muscle twitching or cramps. Seek urgent medical help for severe weakness with difficulty breathing or swallowing — this may indicate a cholinergic crisis (overdose) or a myasthenic crisis (underdose), which are emergencies managed differently.

Important precautions

Use with caution in asthma, heart disease (especially slow heart rate), epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, and stomach or urinary tract obstruction — ambenonium is contraindicated in mechanical obstruction of the gut or urinary tract. Tell your doctor about all medicines you take (including other cholinesterase inhibitors and corticosteroids) and if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Keep regular follow-up appointments with your neurologist.

Storage

Store below 25–30°C in the original package, protected from moisture, and out of the reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack.
