What sumatriptan is used for

Sumatriptan is indicated for the acute relief of migraine attacks. During a migraine attack, blood vessels in the head dilate; sumatriptan stimulates serotonin 5-HT1 receptors, narrowing these vessels and blocking pain pathways. It relieves headache, nausea and sensitivity to light and sound. It is taken when the attack begins, not to prevent attacks and not for other types of headache.

How to use

Take exactly as prescribed. General labeling recommends one 50 mg tablet swallowed whole with water as soon as possible after the migraine attack begins. If the migraine returns, a second dose may be taken no sooner than 2 hours after the first; do not exceed the maximum daily amount stated in the leaflet (usually 300 mg per 24 hours). If the first dose does not help at all, do not take a second dose for the same attack without medical advice. The tablet is scored and may be divided if your doctor recommends a lower dose.

Possible side effects

Common effects include tingling, warmth or pressure sensations (especially in the chest, neck and jaw), dizziness, drowsiness, flushing and nausea. Chest pressure is usually short-lived, but if it is intense or does not pass, seek medical help immediately. Frequent use (more than 10 days per month) can itself cause medication-overuse headache — tell your doctor if attacks become more frequent.

Important precautions

Do not use sumatriptan if you have coronary heart disease, a history of heart attack or stroke, uncontrolled high blood pressure, severe liver disease, or circulation problems in the limbs. Do not combine with other triptans, ergotamine derivatives or MAO inhibitors, and use caution with antidepressants (SSRIs/SNRIs) because of the risk of serotonin syndrome. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. This medicine can cause drowsiness — do not drive until you know how it affects you.

Storage

Store below 25–30°C in the original package, protected from moisture, and out of the reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack.
