What ursodeoxycholic acid is used for

UDCA is a naturally occurring bile acid that makes bile less saturated with cholesterol and protects liver cells from toxic bile acids. It is indicated for the dissolution of small cholesterol gallstones in patients with a functioning gallbladder (when surgery is not suitable), for primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), and for certain other cholestatic liver conditions, as determined by a doctor. Dissolution of stones is a slow process and typically requires several months of continuous treatment with ultrasound follow-up.

How to use

Take exactly as prescribed. The daily dose is calculated by body weight (usually about 10–15 mg/kg per day). For gallstone dissolution, the daily dose is often taken in the evening before bedtime; for liver conditions, the doctor may divide it into 2–3 doses with meals. Swallow the tablets with water. Regular monitoring (ultrasound, liver tests) is part of the treatment.

Possible side effects

The most common effects are digestive: loose stools or diarrhea, nausea, abdominal discomfort. Skin rash is possible. Tell your doctor about severe or persistent abdominal pain, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or any unusual symptoms.

Important precautions

UDCA is not suitable for calcified (radio-opaque) stones, acute inflammation of the gallbladder or bile ducts, or blockage of the bile ducts. Tell your doctor about liver or intestinal diseases, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and all medicines you take — antacids containing aluminium and some cholesterol-lowering resins can bind UDCA and reduce its absorption (they should be taken at least 2 hours apart).

Storage

Store below 25–30°C in the original package, protected from moisture, and out of the reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack.
