What valaciclovir is used for

After ingestion, valaciclovir is converted in the body to aciclovir, which blocks the replication of herpes viruses. It is prescribed for herpes zoster (shingles), treatment of cold sores and genital herpes episodes, and long-term suppression of frequently recurring genital herpes. Started early, it shortens the episode, reduces pain and lowers the chance of complications.

How to use

Take exactly as prescribed — the dose and course length depend on the indication. General labeling: for herpes zoster, treatment is typically taken three times daily for 7 days; for genital herpes episodes, twice daily for 3–10 days; suppression courses are longer. Swallow the tablets with water, with or without food, and drink enough fluids during treatment. Start as early as possible — ideally at the first symptoms.

Possible side effects

The most common are headache and nausea; dizziness, abdominal discomfort and skin reactions are also possible. Report unusual symptoms to your doctor. In elderly patients and those with kidney problems the dose is adjusted — adequate hydration is important to protect the kidneys.

Important precautions

Tell your doctor about kidney disease, immune system conditions, pregnancy or breastfeeding before starting. Do not exceed the prescribed dose. Valaciclovir reduces symptoms and viral shedding but does not eliminate the virus from the body; precautions to avoid transmitting herpes to partners remain necessary.

Storage

Store below 25–30°C in the original package, protected from moisture, and out of the reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack.
