What interferon alfa-2b is used for

Interferon alfa-2b has antiviral, immunomodulating and antiproliferative activity. Viferon suppositories are used as part of combination therapy:

• In children, including newborns and premature infants: acute respiratory viral infections including influenza (also when complicated by a bacterial infection), pneumonia (bacterial, viral, chlamydial), meningitis (bacterial, viral), sepsis, intrauterine infections (chlamydiosis, herpes, cytomegalovirus infection, enterovirus infection, candidiasis including visceral, mycoplasmosis).
• In adults, including pregnant women: urogenital infections (chlamydiosis, cytomegalovirus infection, ureaplasmosis, trichomoniasis, gardnerellosis, papillomavirus infection, bacterial vaginosis, recurrent vaginal candidiasis, mycoplasmosis), primary or recurrent herpes infection of the skin and mucous membranes (localized form, mild to moderate course, including the urogenital form).
• In adults: acute respiratory viral infections including influenza, also when complicated by a bacterial infection.

How to use

The medicine is used rectally. The strength and the number of courses are set by the physician according to age, body weight and the indication. Directions from the approved instruction:

• Newborns, including premature infants with a gestational age above 34 weeks: Viferon 150 000 IU — 1 suppository twice a day every 12 hours, course of 5 days.
• Premature newborns with a gestational age below 34 weeks: Viferon 150 000 IU — 1 suppository three times a day every 8 hours, course of 5 days.
• Children with infectious-inflammatory diseases — recommended number of courses: 1-2 for acute respiratory viral infections and pneumonia, 2-3 for sepsis, cytomegalovirus infection, mycoplasmosis and candidiasis, 1-2 for meningitis and enterovirus infection, 2 for herpes infection; the interval between courses is 5 days.
• Adults with urogenital infections (except herpes): Viferon 500 000 IU — 1 suppository twice a day every 12 hours for 5-10 days.
• Adults with herpes infection: Viferon 1 000 000 IU — 1 suppository twice a day every 12 hours, 10 days or more in recurrent infection; treatment is started at the first signs (itching, burning, redness).
• Pregnant women from week 14 with a urogenital or herpes infection: Viferon 500 000 IU — 1 suppository every 12 hours for 10 days, then 1 suppository every 12 hours twice a week for 10 days; prophylactic courses of Viferon 150 000 IU are repeated every 4 weeks.
• Adults with acute respiratory viral infections or influenza: Viferon 500 000 IU — 1 suppository twice a day every 12 hours for 5-10 days.

Possible side effects

In rare cases allergic reactions are possible (skin rash, itching). These reactions are reversible and disappear within 72 hours after the medicine is stopped. Overdose has not been reported.

Important precautions

• Contraindicated in case of hypersensitivity to any component of the medicine.
• Approved for use from week 14 of pregnancy.
• For primary or recurrent herpes infection the suppositories are not recommended in widespread, atypical or generalized herpes; in the presence of clinical signs of atopic dermatitis, eczema, seborrhoeic dermatitis or Hailey-Hailey disease; with skin tumours; with mental disorders requiring antidepressants, tranquillizers or hospitalization; with neutropenia below 1.5 x 10⁹/l or thrombocytopenia below 90 000/µl; in diseases associated with impaired immune system function.
• Compatible with antibiotics, chemotherapy agents and glucocorticosteroids used in the treatment of the above conditions.
• Use only after medical consultation; do not exceed the prescribed dose.

Storage and packaging

Store at 2-8 °C in a place out of reach of children. Shelf life is 2 years; do not use after the expiry date. The suppositories are supplied in laminated PVC blister packs; one carton contains 10 suppositories (1 blister of 10, or 2 blisters of 5) together with the patient information leaflet.
