What atorvastatin is used for

Atorvastatin is indicated to lower elevated levels of total cholesterol, LDL ("bad") cholesterol and triglycerides, and to raise HDL ("good") cholesterol. By improving the lipid profile it helps reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke and other cardiovascular complications in at-risk patients. It is one of the most widely prescribed medicines in the world and is typically combined with diet and lifestyle measures.

How to use

Take Atorva exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Atorvastatin is usually taken once daily, at any time of day, with or without food. Try to take it at the same time each day. Your doctor will check your lipid levels periodically and adjust the dose if needed. Do not stop the medicine on your own, even if you feel well — cholesterol lowering works only with continuous use.

Possible side effects

Commonly reported effects include headache, nausea, indigestion, joint or muscle aches. Contact your doctor promptly if you develop unexplained muscle pain, tenderness or weakness, especially with fever or dark urine — this can be a sign of a rare but serious muscle condition. Liver enzymes are usually checked before and during treatment.

Important precautions

Do not use atorvastatin during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or in active liver disease. Tell your doctor about liver or kidney problems, thyroid disorders, and all medicines you take — some antibiotics, antifungals and other drugs interact with statins. Avoid large amounts of grapefruit juice, which can increase atorvastatin levels. Limit alcohol.

Storage

Store below 25–30°C in the original strip, protected from moisture, and out of the reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack.
