What atomoxetine is used for

Atomoxetine is indicated for ADHD. It increases the availability of norepinephrine in the brain, helping to improve attention, reduce impulsivity and decrease hyperactivity. The effect develops gradually — noticeable improvement usually appears within 1–2 weeks, and the full effect is assessed after 4–8 weeks of continuous daily use. Treatment is started and monitored by a doctor.

How to use

Take exactly as prescribed, usually once or twice daily (morning and, if advised, late afternoon), with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with water; do not open or crush. The dose is calculated by body weight and adjusted by the doctor. Take it at the same time every day and do not stop abruptly without medical advice.

Possible side effects

Common: nausea, decreased appetite, dry mouth, stomach upset, insomnia, dizziness, slight increase in heart rate or blood pressure. Important warnings: in children and adolescents, mood changes including irritability or thoughts of self-harm must be reported to the doctor immediately; rare liver problems present as yellowing of skin or eyes, dark urine or unexplained flu-like symptoms — seek medical advice promptly.

Important precautions

Do not use with or within 2 weeks of MAO inhibitors, or in narrow-angle glaucoma or severe cardiovascular disease. Tell the doctor about heart problems, high or low blood pressure, liver disease, and all medicines taken. Blood pressure and heart rate are usually checked during treatment, and growth is monitored in children. Use in pregnancy only on medical advice.

Storage

Store below 25–30°C in the original package, protected from moisture, and out of the reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack.
