What modafinil is used for

Modafinil promotes wakefulness by acting on brain neurotransmitters involved in the sleep–wake cycle. It is indicated for excessive sleepiness in narcolepsy, as add-on treatment in obstructive sleep apnea (alongside CPAP), and for shift work sleep disorder. It improves alertness but does not cure the underlying condition and does not replace normal sleep.

How to use

Take exactly as prescribed — usually 200 mg once daily in the morning; for shift work sleep disorder, about 1 hour before the work shift. Swallow the tablet with water, with or without food. Do not take it late in the day to avoid insomnia, and do not exceed the prescribed dose.

Possible side effects

Common: headache, nausea, nervousness, insomnia, dizziness, dry mouth, decreased appetite. Stop taking the medicine and seek medical help at the first sign of a skin rash — rare but serious skin reactions (including Stevens–Johnson syndrome) have been reported. Also report palpitations, chest pain, high blood pressure, mood changes, anxiety, agitation or hallucinations.

Important precautions

Modafinil reduces the effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives — use additional non-hormonal contraception during treatment and for one month after stopping. Use with caution in heart disease, high blood pressure, liver or kidney impairment, and psychiatric conditions. It interacts with many medicines (CYP3A4 substrates) — tell your doctor about everything you take. Not recommended in pregnancy or for children. Modafinil may impair the ability to drive in some patients.

Storage

Store below 25–30°C in the original package, protected from moisture, and out of the reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack.
