General Information

Desferal is a chelating agent used to remove excess iron or aluminum from the body. Deferoxamine binds free iron (Fe³⁺) and forms stable complexes that are then excreted naturally. It is commonly used in patients who receive multiple blood transfusions or those with acute iron poisoning.

Indications

• Chronic iron overload due to repeated blood transfusions
• Acute iron intoxication
• Aluminum overload in patients undergoing dialysis

Pharmacological Action

Administration

Desferal can be administered:

• subcutaneously,
• intramuscularly,
• intravenously (slow infusion),

Contraindications

• Known hypersensitivity to deferoxamine
• Severe renal impairment without dialysis
• Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding only if absolutely necessary
