What doxycycline is used for

Doxycycline is prescribed for respiratory tract infections (bronchitis, pneumonia, sinusitis), skin and soft tissue infections including acne, certain sexually transmitted infections (chlamydia), Lyme disease, and malaria prevention when travelling to risk areas. It works only against bacteria and some atypical pathogens — not against viruses.

How to use

Take exactly as prescribed — usually 100 mg once or twice daily depending on the indication. Swallow the tablet with a full glass of water, during or right after a meal, and do not lie down for at least 30 minutes after taking it (this protects the esophagus from irritation). Dairy products, antacids, iron, calcium and magnesium supplements reduce absorption — take them at least 2–3 hours apart from doxycycline. Complete the full prescribed course.

Possible side effects

Common: nausea, stomach upset, loss of appetite, and increased skin sensitivity to sunlight — use sun protection and avoid strong sun during treatment. Stop and contact your doctor in case of severe diarrhea, skin rash, or signs of allergy. Esophageal irritation is prevented by taking the tablet with plenty of water while sitting or standing.

Important precautions

Not recommended during pregnancy, breastfeeding, or for children under 8 years (risk of permanent tooth discoloration). Tell your doctor about liver disease and all medicines you take (including anticoagulants and anticonvulsants). Avoid alcohol during treatment.

Storage

Store below 25–30°C in the original package, protected from moisture, and out of the reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack.
