What gabapentin is used for

Gabapentin is indicated, under medical supervision, for the treatment of partial epileptic seizures (as add-on therapy when standard treatment is not sufficient) and for peripheral neuropathic pain, such as painful diabetic neuropathy and post-herpetic neuralgia. It does not treat the underlying cause of the pain and is not a painkiller for everyday aches.

How to use

Neurontin is taken by mouth, with or without food, exactly as prescribed by your doctor. The dose is set individually and increased gradually; treatment must never be started, stopped or changed in dose on your own, because stopping abruptly can trigger seizures.

• Swallow the tablet with a sufficient amount of water.
• Do not crush or chew film-coated tablets unless your doctor advises it.
• Follow the dose schedule given by your prescriber.

Possible side effects

Common effects include drowsiness, dizziness, fatigue, headache, tremor, unsteadiness, blurred vision, nausea and weight gain. Less common but serious effects include severe skin reactions, mood changes, suicidal thoughts and signs of angioedema (swelling of the face or throat). Seek medical help immediately if any of these occur.

Important precautions

Tell your doctor about kidney problems, as the dose may need adjustment. Gabapentin may increase the effects of alcohol, opioids and other sedatives. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how the medicine affects you. Do not use during pregnancy or breastfeeding without medical advice.
