What testosterone gel is used for

Testosterone gel is indicated for testosterone replacement in adult men with male hypogonadism — a condition in which the body does not produce enough testosterone. Replacement therapy can help relieve symptoms associated with low testosterone, such as reduced sex drive, tiredness and mood changes, and supports the development and maintenance of male secondary sexual characteristics where testosterone is lacking.

The diagnosis should be confirmed by a doctor on the basis of symptoms and blood tests, and the dose is adjusted individually according to measured testosterone levels. Testosterone gel is not intended for use by women or persons under 18 years of age.

How to use

Use Testoheal Gel exactly as directed by your doctor and follow the leaflet supplied with the package. General prescribing information for testosterone 1% gel recommends applying the gel once daily, preferably in the morning, as a thin layer onto clean, dry, healthy, unbroken skin over the shoulders, upper arms and/or abdomen.

• Apply only the prescribed amount and spread it in a thin layer.
• Allow the gel to dry for a few minutes, then cover the application area with clothing.
• Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after application.
• Do not apply to the genital area, or to broken, irritated or damaged skin.
• Keep to your doctor's blood-test schedule so the dose can be adjusted to keep testosterone within the target range.

Preventing transfer to others

Testosterone can be transferred to other people through skin-to-skin contact with the application site. To protect women and children, cover the application area with clothing once the gel has dried, wash your hands after use, and avoid close skin contact with the application area until it has been washed. If accidental contact occurs, the other person should wash the affected skin with soap and water as soon as possible. Pregnant or breastfeeding women must avoid any contact with the gel.

Possible side effects

The most frequently reported reactions with topical testosterone include irritation at the application site (redness, itching, dryness), acne, breast tenderness or enlargement, mood changes and changes in laboratory values such as increased red blood cell count. Tell your doctor about swelling, breast tenderness, marked mood changes, prolonged or painful erections, or signs of an allergic reaction. Treatment usually includes regular monitoring of testosterone levels, blood count and prostate health (PSA).

Important precautions

Tell your doctor before starting treatment if you have or have had prostate or breast cancer, heart, liver or kidney disease, high blood pressure, epilepsy, migraines, breathing problems during sleep, or if you are taking anticoagulants, corticosteroids or insulin. Storage and packaging

Store below 25°C in the original tightly closed tube, protected from inappropriate heat and out of the reach of children. Testosterone gel is flammable while wet — avoid open flame and do not smoke during and shortly after application until the gel has dried. Do not use after the expiry date printed on the package or if the tube or seal is damaged.
