. What is Tipanat and what is it used for?
Tipanat is an anti-cancer medicine used to treat adults with:
Metastatic Colorectal Cancer (mCRC): Cancer of the colon or rectum that has spread to other parts of the body. It is used when you are no longer responding to other treatments that are no longer effective.
Metastatic Gastric Cancer (mGC): Stomach cancer that has spread to other parts of the body, including cancer of the gastroesophageal junction. It is used when you have previously been treated with at least two other therapies.
This medicine works by interfering with the growth and multiplication of cancer cells, which helps to slow or stop the progression of the disease.
Before you take Tipanat
Do NOT take Tipanat if:
You are allergic to trifluridine, tipiracil, or any of the other ingredients.
You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
You are planning to father a child.
Warnings and Precautions:
Talk to your doctor before taking Tipanat if you have:
Kidney or liver problems.
A history of frequent infections.
A known condition that affects your bone marrow function.
Your doctor will perform regular blood tests before and during your treatment to monitor your blood cell counts (neutrophils, platelets, red blood cells), as this medicine can cause a significant decrease in these counts.
How to take Tipanat
Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you.
Recommended Dose: The usual dose is 35 mg/m² (based on your body surface area) taken twice a day.
Dosing Schedule: Take the tablets with food within one hour after finishing a meal (breakfast and dinner). This helps reduce nausea.
Cycle: Treatment is given in cycles. You will take the tablets twice daily for 5 days, then rest for 2 days (Days 6 and 7). This is followed by another 5 days of treatment (Days 8-12), and then a long rest period of 16 days (Days 13-28).
This completes one 28-day treatment cycle. Your doctor will then reassess and decide if you should continue to the next cycle.
Example of a Dosing Schedule:
Week 1: Take tablets twice a day on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. Rest on Saturday and Sunday.
Week 2: Take tablets twice a day on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. Rest on Saturday and Sunday.
Weeks 3 & 4: Rest completely (do not take any tablets).
Day 29: Start the next cycle.
Important:
Do not crush, break, or chew the tablets. Swallow them whole with a glass of water.
If you miss a dose, skip that dose and continue with the next one at the regular time. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten one.
If you vomit after taking a dose, do not take another dose. Wait and take your next dose at the scheduled time.
Possible Side Effects
Like all medicines, Tipanat can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. The most serious side effects are related to low blood cell counts.
Very Common (May affect more than 1 in 10 people):
Infections (due to low white blood cells - neutropenia)
Severe decrease in blood cell counts (Febrile Neutropenia)
Fatigue, weakness
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, stomach pain
Fever
Mouth sores or inflammation
Hair loss (alopecia)
Skin rash
What to do:
Contact your doctor immediately if you develop a fever (temperature of 38.5°C or higher), chills, or signs of infection (like a sore throat or cough), as this could be a sign of a very low white blood cell count.
Report any unusual bleeding or bruising (sign of low platelets).
Report severe tiredness, paleness, or shortness of breath (signs of low red blood cells/anemia).
Your doctor may need to adjust your dose, delay your treatment, or provide supportive care (like growth factor injections or blood transfusions) to manage these side effects.
