Arpetol is an antiviral medicine produced by the Belarusian company SOOO “Lekpharm” (Logoysk, Minsk region). Each film-coated tablet contains 200 mg of umifenovir hydrochloride. The pack contains 20 tablets. It is a direct-acting systemic antiviral that is also described as an immunomodulatory agent. The 200 mg strength is intended for adults and children from 12 years of age: prevention and treatment of influenza A and B and other acute respiratory viral infections, complex therapy of herpes (including recurrent), prevention of postoperative infectious complications, and complex therapy of rotavirus intestinal infections in children over 12 years. What umifenovir is used for

In adults and children from 12 years of age:

• prevention and treatment of influenza A and B and other acute respiratory viral infections (ARVI)
• complex therapy of herpes, including recurrent herpes infection
• prevention of infectious complications after surgery
• complex therapy of acute intestinal infections of rotavirus origin (children from 12 years)

Lower strengths are used in younger children: the 50 mg strength from 3 years and the 100 mg strength from 6 years; the 200 mg tablet is not intended for children under 12 years.

How to use

The medicine is taken orally, before meals. Adults and children over 12 years — single dose 200 mg (one tablet):

• Treatment of influenza and other ARVI: 200 mg 4 times a day (every 6 hours) for 5 days
• Non-specific prophylaxis during an epidemic: 200 mg twice a week for 3 weeks
• Prophylaxis after direct contact with a person ill with influenza or ARVI: 200 mg once a day for 10–14 days
• Complex therapy of recurrent herpes: 200 mg 4 times a day for 5–7 days, then 200 mg twice a week for 4 weeks
• Prevention of postoperative infectious complications: 200 mg two days before surgery, then on days 2 and 5 after surgery
• Rotavirus intestinal infections in children from 12 years: 200 mg 4 times a day for 5 days

The recommended schedule and duration of intake must be followed. If the symptoms, including a high temperature (38 °C or more), persist after three days of treatment, consult a doctor. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one — take the missed dose as soon as possible and continue the course.

Possible side effects

Adverse reactions are rare (may occur in no more than 1 person in 1000): allergic reactions such as skin rash and itching. Very rarely (no more than 1 person in 10 000): angioedema, heartburn, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea. Discontinue the medicine and consult a doctor if any reaction occurs.

Important precautions

• Do not use in case of allergy to umifenovir or any other component of the tablet
• Do not use in children under 12 years of age (for the 200 mg strength)
• Do not use in the first trimester of pregnancy or during breastfeeding; in the second and third trimesters use only after consulting a doctor
• The tablet contains lactose monohydrate — patients with intolerance to certain sugars should consult a doctor before use
• Safety and efficacy in patients with impaired liver or kidney function have not been studied; no dose adjustment is required in elderly patients
• The medicine does not affect attention or reaction speed
• Umifenovir is registered in Belarus and a number of CIS countries; it is not an approved medicine in the European Union or the United States

Storage

Keep at a temperature not exceeding 25 °C, out of the reach and sight of children. Shelf life: 2 years. Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack.
