Flustop Kids is a prescription antiviral medicine produced by the State Enterprise “Akadempharm” (Minsk, Belarus) in paediatric strengths for children from 1 year of age. Each capsule contains 45 mg of oseltamivir (as oseltamivir phosphate), an inhibitor of influenza virus neuraminidase. The pack contains 10 capsules in one blister, white capsules. The 45 mg strength is used for children weighing more than 15 kg up to 23 kg; the 30 mg strength covers 10–15 kg. Flustop Kids is used for the treatment and post-exposure prevention of influenza A and B under medical supervision.

What oseltamivir is used for

  • Treatment of influenza in children from 1 year of age
  • Prevention of influenza in children from 1 year of age after contact with a person ill with influenza (post-exposure prophylaxis)

Flustop Kids does not replace influenza vaccination.

How to use

Treatment should start no later than 2 days after the first symptoms of influenza or after contact with a sick person. The capsule is swallowed whole with water; it must not be broken or chewed. The medicine may be given with or without food, although food may reduce nausea or vomiting. If the child cannot swallow a capsule, the contents may be mixed with a small amount (maximum 1 teaspoon) of a sweetened food such as chocolate syrup, honey, sugar dissolved in water, a dessert, condensed milk, apple purée or yoghurt — the mixture is taken immediately after preparation.

The dose depends on the child’s body weight (treatment — twice daily for 5 days; post-exposure prophylaxis — once daily for 10 days):

  • 10–15 kg — 30 mg per dose
  • more than 15–23 kg — 45 mg per dose
  • more than 23–40 kg — 60 mg per dose
  • more than 40 kg — 75 mg per dose (may be made up of 30 mg and 45 mg capsules, or one Flustop 75 mg capsule)
  • Immunocompromised children: the treatment course is extended to 10 days
  • In special situations, such as an influenza epidemic, prophylaxis may be continued for up to 6–12 weeks as directed by the doctor

Possible side effects

The most common reactions in children are cough, nasal congestion and vomiting; otitis media, headache, conjunctivitis, ear pain, runny nose, abdominal pain, indigestion and nausea are also reported. Rarely reported since oseltamivir came on the market: severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis, angioedema), liver disorders, Stevens–Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis, gastrointestinal bleeding, and neuropsychiatric disorders (hallucinations, confusion, delirium, abnormal behaviour, anxiety, nightmares). If any of these occur, stop the medicine and seek medical help immediately.

Important precautions

  • Do not use in case of allergy to oseltamivir or to any other component of the capsule
  • Do not use in children under 1 year of age, in terminal renal failure, or in severe hepatic impairment
  • The capsule contains anhydrous lactose — it is not suitable for children with lactose intolerance, lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption
  • Tell the doctor about kidney disease (a dose adjustment may be needed), severe illness, immune disorders, or chronic heart or respiratory disease
  • Report any change in behaviour or mood during treatment immediately

Storage

Store in the original blister to protect from moisture, at a temperature not exceeding 25 °C, out of the reach and sight of children. Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack.
